Exploring Our Matrix
(Return to my home page) : Blog Home : December 2005
I finally watched the DVD of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. One criticism of the movie that had been made is the way Padme, who was such a strong character in Episodes I & II, was just a weepy emotional mess. Although this is still a problem, I now view it as one of editing rather than storytelling per se. The reason? The deleted scenes included on the DVD, which show Padme's involvement in the beginnings of the rebel alliance, and her presentation to Palpatine of a petition from senators asking him to restore democracy. Had these scenes not been removed, largely to keep the movie down to a managable length, we would have had a more balanced character of Padme in the movie. Maybe one day there will be a 'definitive edition', offered in some format yet to be invented, which has all six movies with the deleted scenes integrated into them all. And hopefully if there ever is such a definitive edition, it will be Anakin at the appropriate age whose spirit appears alongside Yoda and Obi-Wan at the very end!
